Master's dissertation
Children's literature publishing in Breton language
Starting the 70s, the Breton language revival enabled the development of Breton teaching schools and of young neo speakers. Breton children’s literature which was until then only addressed to a few readers, suddenly got to grow into a literature also intended to much younger readers. Nowadays, Breton children’s books represents the biggest part of Breton literature production. In this dissertation, we will interrogate its dependency to institutions, the balance between publication and demand, and the distribution choices made by publishers to answer to one question: what future can we imagine for Breton children’s literature publishing ? We will see that the production lacks diversity in content as much as style, that distribution strategy through digital technology and regional council would be a good option to reach more potential readers and that mediation actions to develop reading in Breton in schools could be done. Breton children’s literature publishing is still new and uncertain and cannot stand without the help of the regional council and activist networks. But numerous possibilities are available to move forward and stand as a steady, and why not, a profitable market.
